Not everyone enjoys my writing. That’s okay; like the legendary Red Skeleton said, I love my enemies too because “I made them”. This isn’t to say that I go out of my way to get people to actually hate me. On the contrary; I try to be myself and if people still find exception with that, well that’s okay on my part. It’s when people hate me from a distance – without ever getting to know precisely who I am – that infuriates me. Those who ‘dislike’ my material come from several groups. First, we have those who think that I have no talent. Okay, fine. Edgar A. Poe wasn’t well received during his life and Herman Melville didn’t earn his place in history until a century after he passed away. I’m willing to wait until eternity for my place upon the pantheon of literary elites. J

A second group that takes exception to my work involves those who question my support for the war against terrorists – specifically my personal role in educating the public about the war, their involvement within it, and my desire to develop technologies and techniques to combat the terrorists. Again, fine. Not everyone agrees with my philosophy. I know of some bloggers, for example, who feel that citizen and/or business involvement within the war should be restricted solely to securing computer networks from hostile attack. That’s their belief. My belief is equally simple: terrorism is a primal stain upon the human condition and sooner or later all of the best technology in the world is not going to aid us one bit when people resort to throwing rocks and punches. I believe that war is quite literally hell, needs to be fought with conscience, and there is no such thing as ‘innocents’; only ‘non-combatants’. They believe that civilian involvement within the war is simply safeguarding our computers against hackers. Obviously, they will want to pass on my forthcoming Mini-manual of the Independent Counterterrorist.

Yet another group that hates my writing are those who simply hate what I say and not what I believe. That is, they still hate what I stand for, but they simply lash out at me as soon as I type the first letter, utter the first sound, or as soon as they hear my name being mentioned. It’s as if being ‘R.J. Godlewski’ is to be considered a disease, a foul degeneration of the human species fit for nothing else than to be extinguished in hell. I’m prepared for them; I was once within the military after all and herein lays the reason behind this particular article. I should be getting some extra sleep – I write all of my novels, short stories, books, and commentaries during the wee hours of the morning – but I just read John Gibson’s ‘Word’ over at the Fox News Web site regarding Oakland, California’s refusal to permit U.S. soldiers into the passenger terminal. If this story is true, then it is an extreme outrage. However, I do not want to comment on other stories that cannot be personally verified by yours truly. I will, though, comment on the raw hatred that permeates the ‘Greater Left’ of this country – those villains who are setting America up for defeat in nearly every facet of its life, irrespective of whether such actions are detrimental to their own well-being or not.

I served on active duty within the United States Navy from November 17th, 1981 to November 16th, 1985, within the inactive Reserves from November 17th, 1985 to November 16th, 1987, and within the active Reserves from January 25th, 1991 to January 24th, 1993. I also joined the Navy four months and seventeen days prior to reporting for active duty. This means – assuming that my math skills are accurate – that I’ve spent just under eight and a half years attached to the United States Navy and for which service I was awarded – nay, earned – two Honorable Discharges. I, therefore, understand a thing or two about being within the military.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t think that my service was particularly useful to the nation at large – not in comparison with those serving today – and I’ll even gladly admit that several people that I knew firsthand within the military had absolutely no business being within the service (they were dopers, convicts, etc.). Having had said that, however, I know that each one of us alive today owes them a great deal for their service. It’s not because they were outstanding citizens, but that they carried out their duties on behalf of the nation and performed those duties under circumstances that would subdue your ‘typical’ citizen. Today’s military is light-years ahead of those that I served with but none should be subjected to the kind of treatment that liberals within this country seem to dish out upon them.  Furthermore – and this is where I break ranks with many – I don’t believe that the oath of allegiance to the United States of America has an expiration date and how we conduct ourselves after leaving the military service is just as important (if not more so) as how we conducted ourselves while serving within uniform. This is one of the things that I loved about the motion picture Starship Troopers – no one got ‘citizenship’ except through serving within the military.

There is no more despicable act that any citizen can undertake than to ridicule, deny the value of, or otherwise treat our military personnel and veterans with intentional degradation or inferred hostilities. That is, every one of those who claim to be Americans (and just about everyone else on the damn  planet) owe their freedoms and their lives to those who have served or are proudly serving within uniform. War may be hell but paradise comes only through the sacrifice of those who know the price. Would we know the intimate price of Heaven if Christ had simply dropped down for a brief visit and said only “behave”? Could we have defended against communism for six decades had the long litany of Soviet tyrants not been able to think “You know, those guys over there actually used nuclear weapons once”? More importantly, would those bastards preaching to the choir from caves and Third World back alleys think twice about launching attacks against us had we not shown them that we were “ready, willing, and able” to launch wars against them irrespective of whether the entire planet thought such actions were insane? Fortune does indeed favor the prepared but freedom comes to only to those who are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice and time and again our troops have shown this with infinite valor.

Condemning our troops, labeling them as ‘criminals’ or ‘terrorists’, or making a mockery out of oneself by espousing our enemies is treasonous and the only reason that those culprits are not stood up in front of a firing squad and shot – several times – is that those whom we have elected to serve in our stead are by far the most despicable of all. Citizens might claim – perhaps erroneously – to attribute some “First Amendment” actions to their deeds but our Legislature exists to serve the benefit of the nation as a whole and not their special interest benefactors. Our enemies can only defeat us (or at least try to) through complicating the issue and keeping us thinking instead of doing. It is, therefore, quite easy to tell who’s our enemies and who’s our allies. The Liberal Left and even some so-called ‘Moderates’ (if you’re moderate, in my book, you’re not convinced yourself of ‘the cause’) can be called out based solely on what they believe.

If you don’t believe that innocent human life is worth protecting in its entirety, then how are you sincere in regards to your desire to protect the rest of life and its environment? If you don’t believe that those invading our nation under the premise of a better life through illegal methods are criminal then how are you sincere about the welfare of national security itself? Most especially, if you are not willing to defend “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” wherever it is threatened, then how can you be sincere about your claims to be exercising such rights within your own country? The truth is, people, that liberals and ‘moderate’ politicians do not sincerely believe in what they are telling you. This is deceit and this is trickery and if they are resorting to both deceitful and treasonous behavior then they cannot be trusted in anything.

This is precisely why they are so appalled at the existence of our military. They want you to believe that it is simply because of the war in Iraq but their methods are obvious; they would simply find some other way to voice their disgust with our proud men and women within uniform. They simply hate our way of life. They don’t want America to be strong and productive. They don’t want our citizens to be safe and carried for. All of their claims to serve the people, to respect individual liberties and cultures is nothing but a shame to catch us off guard. As for myself, I actually believe what I say that I believe – even if it should cost me every single fan that I have on this great planet of ours.

I believe that we’re here by the Grace of God (not some heretical ‘Chief God’ Allah) and must protect the most vulnerable of innocent human lives. I believe that Americans must take a stand for their freedoms and that each one of us must make a conscientious effort to protect our lives, our communities, and our nation from those who wish to invade our integrity for whatever reason. I believe that when attacked we must strike back and strike back repeatedly until our enemies are vanquished and their supporters converted. I believe that our men and women within the U.S. military (including “discharged members” of the armed forces – that is, veterans) are the best in the world and need to be accorded every respect imaginable. If this makes me a threat to liberalism then I have only one thing to say: bring it on!
